A Great Article on Outdoor Lighting from The ELK Lighting Group

The weather is nice and toasty, and its time to plan some of those fabulous outdoor parties and events, and dress your home up for the occasion. Outdoor lighting enhances the overall beauty of your home. Front entrance lighting , as well as overall outdoor lighting is the first thing that welcomes your guests as they approach your home. It is the first impression of your home. It is important to take extra time in selecting the proper light and style for both visual appeal and security. For example, the stunning Barrington Gate Collection shown at right adds an impressive note to the overall tone on this home.   It is a perfect match for the stucco and tile construction, as well.   You can find Barrington Gate by Elk Lighting by clicking here on our website.

Wall lanterns and chain hung lanterns will give your home a warm, welcoming look, while assuring the safety of your guests and family. They can also set the right mood for relaxation and outdoor entertaining.
Plan on using pier mounts or post lights near driveways and walkways.

Matching the lighting style to the house is of the utmost importance.   In the example above, we see how the lights provide a wonderful compliment to the house style.   Another example is with the Sedona Lighting Group.  Simplicity of craft and form give the Sedona Collection a very attractive look through its minimalist approach.  Inspired by the architecture and lifestyle of the southwest, the group nonetheless has an appeal that works for homes with clean lines, such as the residence shown at the left.  This home, while not necessarily "southwestern", really benefits from the sharp mission angles of the Sedona design.  You can find the Sedona Lighting Collection by Elk Lighting by clicking on this link.

Energy Saving Outdoor Lighting Tips
Several outdoor fixtures from ELK in the Barrington Gate collection have been certified Energy Star products.  In addition, you can find many that are compatible with LED—Long lasting bulbs with energy savings greater than compact fluorescent bulbs.  Of course, homeowners are most familiar with Compact Fluorescent (CFL) - Readily available, uses existing fixture’s sockets, more efficient than incandescent bulbs. Exterior lighting is one of the best places to use CFLs because of their long life. If you live in a cold climate buy a lamp with a cold weather ballast since standard CFLs may not work well below 40*F. Elk Lighting even offers som lights powered by small Photovoltaic (PV) modules that convert sunlight directly into electricity. Consider PV-powered lights for areas that are not near an existing power supply line. Outdoor lights with a photocell unit and motion sensor will turn on only at night or when someone is present.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau and Our March on Washington!

CONCORD RESIDENT RICHARD SEXTON DESCENDS ON WASHINGTON FOR IAB LONG TAIL ALLIANCE FLY-IN
Second Annual Capitol Hill “Fly-In” Gives Voice to Critical Role of Ad-Supported Internet for Small Businesses in the U.S. Economy

WASHINGTON, June 15, 2010 – For the second annual IAB Long Tail Alliance Washington Fly-In, Concord resident Richard Sexton, was one of 46 small publishers and e-commerce entrepreneurs brought together by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) to tell their elected representatives about the important role played by the advertising-supported Internet in empowering small business growth in America. The Long Tail web publishers representing 14 states spent June 15 on Capitol Hill meeting with 35 House Districts and 12 Senate Offices including members of the Senate Commerce Committee. The Congressional action was part of a two day event, hosted by the IAB to showcase the importance of the ad-supported Internet to the U.S. economy.

Richard Sexton runs Carolina Rustica, a high-end furniture and lighting retailer that operates both a website and retail store in Concord, NC. The company has 10 employees and has been in business since 2000.

“The Long Tail Alliance is an army of entrepreneurs who have created businesses powered by interactive advertising, and their ranks are growing every day,” said Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO, IAB. “It is critical that legislators and regulators understand their challenges and their contributions to the new media revolution, as well as the value they bring to the U.S. economy.”

The IAB Long Tail Alliance Washington Fly-In launched in June 2009 with the release of “The Economic Value of the Advertising-Supported Internet Ecosystem,” the first comprehensive analysis of the economic impact of this ever-more important medium. Among its findings: 2.1%, or $300 billion, of the total U.S. GDP is contributed by the ad-supported Internet, which has created 3.1 million jobs, including 20,000 small businesses. At the same time, the IAB also released “I Am the Long Tail,” a seven-minute video that ties together vignettes from Long Tail publishers across the nation and puts a human face on the Long Tail. It is part of a larger, ongoing effort to collect and share the Long Tail story in online videos at iamthelongtail.com.

Mr. Sexton visited four Congressional offices, including those of Representative Larry Kissel of the 8th Congressional District. Kissel maintains an office at Gibson Mill in Concord, directly below the retail store of Carolina Rustica, in a 105 year old former textile mill. “It was a great opportunity to advocate on behalf of an issue that jeopardizes the ease and use of the internet as we now know it. It was also my first experience in working directly with Congressional offices, and I have to say, it was very exciting to be a part of the democratic process”

“Providing an opportunity for IAB Long Tail publishers to speak directly to Congresspeople is the best means to bring to life the very real threat posed by the proposed regulation of interactive advertising,” said Mike Zaneis, Vice President, Public Policy, IAB. “These business owners are the new face of ‘mom and pop’ shops. They represent a diversity of voices that simply could not exist without interactive advertising. This event provides them with a unique forum to be heard.”

This year's Fly-In also included a full day of training sessions, strategic planning panels and roundtable discussions created specifically to address the business interests of small publishers. Long Tail members and ad network and advertising agency executives shared actionable insights on how the community of small publishers can improve their businesses. The two-day event also served as a unique networking opportunity for small publishers, who, for the most part, work from their homes and have limited opportunities to meet other small business owners like themselves.

From BDI, Our High End Home Entertainment Furniture Supplier

Here is a great article from BDI, a product spotlight on their new introductions the Cirrus home theatre cabinet and the Xela table collection

Product Spotlight - Cirrus 8158 and Xela Tables

Unique console cabinet and tables now shipping!

Sometimes the ideal TV height is higher than the typical TV cabinet allows. For those places where the TV needs to be a little higher, such as the bedroom or game room, BDI has engineered the console-height CIRRUS 8158 home theater cabinet. This innovative cabinet, designed by Matthew Weatherly, is now shipping.

Cirrus 8158 is the ideal choice for a flat panel TV (up to 60”) and a large home theater system, with space for a full array of components, including a media storage drawer. The cabinet features sliding wood-framed doors with IR-friendly, grey tinted glass that conceal two side compartments for electronic components. The center shelf can be easily adjusted, providing the ideal space for a center channel speaker and/or additional components. The center drawer discreetly stores over 75 DVDs or CDs. CIRRUS 8158 is compatible with BDI’s swiveling Arena Flat Panel TV Mount 9972; this allows the TV to stand even higher and always provide the best view.

Also now shipping are the beautifully functional XELA tables, designed by Al Glass. Storage and flexibility are the keys to the elegant XELA tables. Crafted with beautifully grained American Walnut and grey tinted tempered glass, all tables in the collection integrate storage compartments to keep everyday items out of the way. These tables feature a rich Chocolate Stained finish that perfectly complements the grain of the Walnut veneer (and coordinates beautifully with the new Avion Series II in the same finish). The coffee tables are available in three models, and glide on hidden casters or may be secured in place – perfect for use with a sleeper sofa. The versatile XELA console table also makes a great laptop desk.

Avion and Novia Offer Speaker Storage Options
Since 2005, BDI's AVION and NOVIA collections have featured innovative openings in door and drawer fronts that accommodate glass or speaker fabric panels. When the user is placing speakers in the side component compartments, they will need to convert the glass panels to speaker fabric. Similarly, if the user is not using a center channel speaker in a speaker drawer, they may elect to change this front over to a glass panel.

Changing from one to the other is a simple process. Though we originally included a set of optional panel inserts with these cabinets, we discontinued this practice in 2007 after learning that less than 10% of consumers were utilizing them. However, this option is still available to consumers. We now provide optional inserts only on request from the Dealer or the consumer. The user can find further information about obtaining panel inserts in their assembly instructions. Contact Carolina Rustica Customer Service for more information.

Vexa
Imagine a clean lined steel and black tempered glass stand at a great price, and you have the very definition of the Vexa series. Vexa is a collection of open TV stands with gently curved fronts. Combine them together and a home theater is framed with a unique 'wave' design. Contructed of powder coated steel and tempered black glass, the collection features an integrated wire management back panel to hide cables, and hidden wheels that allow the entire stand to move away from the wall.

10 Design Do's: From our Lighting Supplier: Golden Lighting

Golden Lighting is one of our favorite lighting suppliers, because they have such a great variety of designs and their pricing is absolutely incredible.   They consistently introduce popular designs that are always in demand by today's homeowners.    On their last newsletter, they send out 10 Design "Do's", which we thought would be helpful to our customers.   Remember, you can shop for Golden Lighting here on our website.

1. Get inspired.Don’t box yourself into a particular design style. Today’s design is about bringing together a mixture of elements that inspire you. Maybe you're mostly contemporary, but a rustic lamp really inspires you. Don't be afraid to mix and match -- just make it your own distinctive style.

2. More is not always better.
Don't buy decorative items just to fill space. Find items that mean something to you and inspire you. Don't settle on something that’s just okay because it fits your room or budget. It’s worth the wait to save your money and get decorative pieces that fit your personality and make you smile!
3. Have a plan.
When you have a plan before you start decorating it helps you to create a room that is functional and creates synergy throughout.
4. Buy quality.
Discounts and bargains are great, but make sure it’s a quality piece. Just because it's pretty, doesn't mean it's quality. Buy brands that you trust, and remember it’s worth paying a little more for something that will last.
5. Explore color.
White is boring. Color brings personality and style into a room. Be bold! Find shades that make you happy and liven up your room. It’s especially fun to explore your creativity in smaller rooms that you don't use as often, such as a guest bathroom.
6. Keeping up with the Jones’ – not necessary.
Decorate for you, not your friends or guests. Your style should be uniquely yours. Looking at trends to give you ideas is fine, but make your space your own. You will be the one living with your choices every day.
7. Lighting can change a room.
Of course you need lighting to see, but think beyond the functional. Lighting can set the mood of the room and with so many unique styles and finishes to choose from, consider selecting lighting as you would furniture. Maybe instead of a traditional lamp, try a sconce or chandelier as part of your design theme.
8. Art comes in many forms.
Art doesn’t have to come from a pricey gallery. It just has to have value to you. Framing your child’s drawings makes lovely art for a kid’s room. Think outside the box. Even a unique light or fan can be the focal art of the room!
9. Use all six room surfaces: four walls, a floor and ceiling.
Look up! There’s more than just four walls to decorate in a room. Don't forget the ceiling. Extend the color on the walls into the ceiling to create a cohesive look to the room. Just be sure to choose a ¼ lighter shade of paint on the ceiling since horizontal planes tend to look darker than vertical planes. Or try ceiling tiles or different textures. Also, make sure you choose quality surfaces for your flooring. Your floor get’s a lot of use, make sure it cleans and wears nicely.
10. Room design should blend.
With so many open floor plans, you need to consider how your new design will fit or flow into the other rooms of your home. Do the color schemes and design styles work together? Coordinate the metal finish from your kitchen into the metal surfaces of the lamps and coffee tables of the living room.

Why We Love Thayer Coggin

There are few names as iconic in modern furniture design as Thayer Coggin and Milo Baughman.   Working on little more than a handshake, these gentlemen created some of the most fashion-forward, yet timeless creations over a fourty-year period.   We are truly proud to represent Thayer Coggin here at Carolina Rustica

Located less than an hour away from our showroom, Thayer Coggin is known as one of the fine names in residential furniture manufacturing. Entering into business in 1953, Thayer Coggin carved out an identity in the home furnishings market through a commitment to modern, classic design. Family owned and run, Thayer Coggin has 350,000 square feet of manufacturing space to produce some of the most recognizable furniture designs in the residential market, particularly sectionals, as shown to the left. Thayer Coggin's greatest association is with the designer Milo Baughman, one of the leading modern furniture designers of the late 20th century. His uniquely American designs were forward-thinking and distinctive, yet unpretentious and affordable. His prolific and highly influential work continues to be reinvented and revived by contemporary furniture designers and dealers alike. Baughman is most famous, however, for his longtime association with Thayer Coggin, which began in 1953, and lasted until his death in 2003. He also lectured broadly on the state of modern design, extolling the positive benefits of good design on the lives of human beings, and helping to define and shape the discussion for years to come.

We have several wonderful pieces of Thayer Coggin in our showroom. One of our favorite pieces is the Cloverdale Extension Dining Table. With its stunningly beautiful cross-leg base and sleek contemporary design, this table is a real eye-catcher. It is also incredibly practical. It is shown here with the Regency 2000 Upholstered Side Chair, which compliments this table design. This set is sitting in our showroom and it gets lots of attention.

Through founder Thayer Coggin's vision, and Milo Baughman's creations, a Distinguished Design Award honoree, Thayer Coggin has amassed a highly original collection of furniture. Now approaching its fifth decade of furniture manufacturing, Thayer Coggin is poised to maintain its position of prominence into the next century. For Thayer Coggin, very simply, creativity and purpose spell success.

Thayer Coggin is known for its outstanding, high quality furniture. They go an extra step with their wood frames so that each joint is glued and doweled, and then stapled. If that is not enough they add screws to give the frame even more strength. The Modern Step Console Table is one such piece. It has a simple yet stunning visual context of geometric design, which is reinforced by time-honored craftsmanship. This particular piece can also be viewed on our showroom floor. We also enjoy the quality of their upholstery. Their care in upholstery is exemplified by using the same person to upholster the entire piece – instead of having one person do the inside and someone else do the outside.

Thayer Coggin is a leader in design and in comfort as well. They use Polyblendown for most cushions, which is an innovative seat construction of feathers, down and polyester fiber wrapped around a polyurethane foam core. The feathers, down and polyester fiber are sewn into compartments to keep construction evenly distributed.   We would love to talk to you more about Thayer Coggin, so please give us a call at 800-205-7819 or start shopping on our website here.

Some information about BuySAFE, Our Consumer Confidence Solution

Many site visitors have commented on the presence of the buySAFE logo found in the lower right hand corner of our website. Moving beyond its origins on eBay, the buySAFE bonding service is now helping a broad range of e-retailers build greater confidence with the visitors to their web sites, especially sites like Carolina Rustica

Sales, free shipping and product recommendations don’t always do the trick when it comes to turning online shoppers into customers—security and confidence are also critically important, according to Jeff Grass, president and CEO of buySAFE, Inc.

The Arlington, Va.-based company provides a comprehensive consumer confidence solution that online retailers use to increase their web site conversion rates, sales and overall profitability. The buySAFE service provides an explicit third-party endorsement of a retailer’s reliability, stability and good performance via a buySAFE Seal. And it gives shoppers the option to purchase a bond that provides peace of mind over the three things they care about the most—that their personal information is safe, that they will have a good experience and get what they paid for and that they are getting the best deal.

Specifically, the bond provides a buyer identity theft protection, a full guarantee of their purchase up to $25,000 and a 30-day lowest-price guarantee. Online retailers like Carolina Rustica display the blue-and-gold buySAFE Seal on their sites. The buySAFE Seal includes a link to a verification page that includes merchant details, and the seal remains in view as consumers navigate through the pages of a site.

Via the buySAFE Seal, retail sites also display the brands of well-known insurance companies that underwrite the buySAFE guarantee, including Liberty Mutual Group, The Travelers Co. and Ace. The endorsements of these trusted companies also build confidence in the merchant. Displaying trust seals coupled with a broad third-party guarantee is a tactic that makes consumers feel more secure about their purchases and gives a competitive edge to merchants. While effective for merchants of all sizes, it's particularly helpful for e-retailers that are not household names and thus have yet to build confidence with a large numbers of shoppers.

"Not everyone who shops online feels completely safe and secure," Grass says. "When consumers perceive risk, they either avoid buying online, they go to a different merchant or they reduce the price they are willing to pay." In fact, the rise of comparison shopping sites makes that jump even easier. "If I'm a merchant with the same product at the same price as other retailers, but consumers don’t feel as confident buying from me, I either lose sales or I am forced to discount my price to get the consumer to buy—and that cuts right into my profit margins."
